When I was a kid we used to watch the Summer Olympics. I’d pretend to be a gymnast as it was my favorite Olympic sport. My mom would wrap my wrists and I’d fling myself around the living room. I only ever ended up being able to do a handstand. So that was about the end of my gymnastics career. I still like watching the Olympics. Though as an adult instead of flinging myself around I sling back some drinks. Often playing some of these Olympic Drinking Games.

If you’re like me and often bored by organized sports (sorry football fans), you might need something to keep you engaged. With the Paris Summer Olympics starting July 26th and running through August 11th you have a lot of time to check out a multitude of competitions. Because of this my friends and I have come up with a few drinking games. Mostly just to keep things interesting.
These rules can either cause you to get belligerently wasted or a nice even tipsy depending how you play. Some people choose to take a shot at certain times with specific sports or take a sip of their beer or cocktail, whatever it is you’re drinking. Take it easy, don’t get too sloshed and have fun. If you make up your own Olympic drinking games while watching leave a comment below!
When Should You Take A Drink?

Every time the U.S. wins a medal. In 2020 the United States earned 113 Olympic Medals. That’s a lot of drinks, spread that out over a few weeks and you should hopefully be okay! Or only take a drink for the medal if you’re actually watching. I definitely wouldn’t advise drinking 113 shots, even if it is over a couple of weeks.

Simone Biles Flag Bearer?

If Simone Biles is the flag bearer in the opening ceremony for the United States. There are already bets that have Simone Biles being the flag bearer. You can check out this website for more information about the odds on who will carry the flag. I think it’s too easy of a choice. I feel like they’ll pick someone else. Maybe just to fuck with everyone who made bets.
Athlete Falls Down
This is not a good one to play if you’re watching soccer. My friend Mandie came up with it, I believe she was thinking about gymnastics for this one. Nevertheless, if you want to get good and wasted one day, watch some soccer and take a drink every time an athlete falls down. I’m sure there are other sports where athletes fall, but I’m on the soccer train with this drinking game.
Mention of Host Country or Paris

I’m sure that every time an announcer or commentator has a moment or leads into a commercial they will mention something about France or Paris. I envision it to be something like “Reporting from Paris, these are the 2024 Summer Games”. Who knows, maybe I’m crazy. But I do think they’re going to say the names Paris and France multiple times. It works well too with French athletes. “Representing France in archery today is….” whoever is representing France in archery. If someone wants to keep a running tally, I’d be totally down to get that information. In any event, drink up!
Sob Story or Scandal

Everyone loves a good sob story and NBC has always known that. I mean, I’ve watched a lot of America’s Got Talent and the amount of times I cried. Well….I guess I could win a gold medal for crying. Anyway, if you see a sob story coming along, take a drink.
Olympic or World Record
Every time an athlete sets an Olympic or World Record. I tried to figure out how many Olympic or World Records there were in the 2020 summer Olympics, but there were too many to count. So here’s the Wikipedia page to help you out. There are a lot, so be careful with this one! I’m also going to include scandals in this one. If there’s discussion about any sort of scandal with the Olympians you should probably take a drink for that as well.
Make Your Own Olympic Drinking Games
I tried to think of some games that had to do with commercial predictions. For example, drink when you see an American flag in a commercial. Or if the first commercial for the break is a GMC advertisement, take a drink. I didn’t choose these because I honestly don’t know what kind of commercials we’ll see. Maybe you can come up with some of your own Olympic Drinking Games once they start and share them with the rest of the class. Leave a comment here or check out my Instagram and leave a comment there. Have fun and be safe!
