Activities to do While Drinking

When I was in college, drinking was the activity. We’d go to parties, drink shitty alcohol and hang out with friends. Now, as an adult, I try to partake in other activities along with drinking. While there are things that are a lot of fun when you’re not drinking, sometimes having a bit of booze in you could make it a bit MORE fun. Here are five activities I like to do while drinking with friends.

Yahtzee

I have to admit. I have a secret love of Yahtzee. Well, maybe to my friends it’s not so secret. But it’s never been mentioned on this website so far. When I was teaching, I used it as a reward for the students who got their work finished on time. It was so much fun playing with them, teaching them strategy, kicking their asses. Plus I ALWAYS love when someone gets a Yahtzee. The game taught my self-centered fifth graders that it’s exciting when ANYONE gets a Yahtzee. My classroom was sometimes a bit too loud when we played, but we had the best time.

Of course I couldn’t be drinking and playing Yahtzee with my students, but I can with my friends! It’s a great game to play because it doesn’t require a ton of attention paid while playing, but it can be funny when someone fucks up and forgets what they’re doing thus making mistakes. I also love a game of chance. It’s so fun when someone rolls that one die that they might need when taking a big chance. Everyone can have fun even if someone else is winning.

My cousin introduced me to playing for money. He and his friends play for 10 cents a point. When my friend Stephanie came to visit we played and she had NO LUCK during her entire visit. She ended up owing me close to $70 but we had lots of fun……or at least I had lots of fun!

Trivia Night at a Local Bar

The town I live in has a variety of options for trivia. Chatting about it with friends we figured out that there was trivia in at least one bar every evening Monday-Thursday in our very small town. The bar I work at Ko’olau Distillery has ours on Thursday. Drinking and trivia at this point in my life go hand in hand. Head to a bar on their slow days when they’re trying to get people in and enjoy some healthy competition. Often times the bar will offer prizes of gift certificates for their establishment. Meaning you can go back and drink more!

Trivia is best when you can get a diverse group of people. The games I go to have limit of seven people. Each person has the “thing” they’re good at. I am excellent with housewives or Vanderpump Rules trivia. Interestingly enough (or not) I also excel at rhyming. Get your group of friends together and head out to take on the trivia world with all of your amazing knowledge.

Poker

I am not a poker player. That’s not true. I’m a poker player, but not a poker winner. Wait, maybe that’s not true. I actually recently won $400 at poker a few months ago. Anyway, none of that matters except to introduce Poker as a fun activity to do while drinking.

Poker is a great game to play and a poker party can be put together at your house with just a few tables and some poker chips. I have friends that play with $5.00 buy ins and others who throw down a lot more money than that.

The friends I do have that play and throw parties at their house will often batch (prepare in advance) a bunch of one single type of cocktail and serve that for their poker playing friends. Beer and wine are excellent drinks to have on hand while playing.

Karaoke

Personally, I can ONLY karaoke when drinking. A little liquid courage is super helpful when it comes to singing in front of strangers. There’s a dive bar near where I live that has karaoke at all times. I don’t sing into a microphone but I will sing along with the person that does have the mic.

Bachelorette parties, birthdays, after work, any time is good for an evening of drinks and karaoke. Pick one of your favorite songs or get one of your friends to pick a favorite of yours and sing your heart out. Honestly, I feel like singing at the top of my lungs makes me feel better when I’m feeling down. So get out there and have fun!

Conversation Starter Games or Cards

I think that you never truly know everything a person. Having friends I’ve known for decades they can still surprise me with the things they tell me. I also think when you’re starting a relationship or starting to date someone you should try and get to know more about a person by starting interesting conversations. There are multiple conversation starter games/card packs/books that can do that for you. Recently, the second date I had with someone included hanging out at the beach for the day. I was nervous that we’d run out of things to talk about so I brought THIS book with me. It was awesome to have it readily available. The questions got our conversation started but it always ended up with us continuing the conversation in other ways.

These games are great for when you’re hanging out with your friends. Drinking often loosens lips just a bit and can get a really great conversation started. You pull out one of these cards and the conversation that can ensue can be as deep or as superficial as the alcohol allows. I’m not going to lie, this idea came while I was a bit drunk myself. I was sitting at Lanikai Brewing and asked one of the bartenders, Bailey, what they thought some fun activities to do while drinking were. She didn’t even hesitate and this was her idea. We’re Not Really Strangers is a set of cards you can by for this purpose. They have multiple box options for different groups of people.
