Drinking Games

Drinking Games

I must admit, I wasn’t much of a drinker in college. I didn’t like feeling out of control or hungover the next day. More than anything, I was super stingy with my money and would rather spend my money on something else. That being said, I do love good drinking games! I’d find the cheapest beer and liquor to play with and make that my one day a weekend of drinking and playing with friends. I might have been a bit lame in college, but I made it work and had lots of great friends that were always pushing me to play just a bit more.

There are so many drinking games out there in the world. Card games, board games, made up games…..a plethora of options! I thought it would be fun to feature a few of these games every once in a while to help you engage in shenanigans at the next party you throw or attend. These are two that I’ve played and thought were fun and didn’t need much of anything to play.

Be Safe When Playing Drinking Games

I want to preface this by saying that I want to make sure that you’re always drinking responsibly! DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! It’s SO easy these days to get an Uber, Lyft, or cab that it seems insane to even think about getting into the driver’s seat after you’ve been playing these drinking games. Also, these can and will get you VERY drunk, so make sure you’re well hydrated and keeping your tummy full so you don’t feel too terrible the next day. You can also refer back to this post about ways to stay healthy when drinking.

Pizza Box

This one was found from a Reddit thread that had a bunch of other drinking games, but I thought this one sounded like a good time! My friends and I tried it the other night and had a good time with it.

You start with a pizza box, broken down beer case, or an Amazon box can also work. Every player writes their name on the cardboard and draws a circle around it.

The starting player tosses a quarter onto the box. When it lands on somebody’s name, that person has to drink and it becomes the next player’s turn.

If the quarter or whatever you’re using to throw lands on a blank spot, the player writes a rule in that location and draws a circle around it. You can make the circle as big or small as you want. If someone lands in a rule circle they have to do that rule.

Each person gets one flip per turn, and then you continue to the next person. You keep going until the box is filled with rules. Some of the rules we came up with were things like “take a shot”, “everyone drinks” and “10 burpees”. The burpees got pretty difficult after a while and definitely made my stomach flip a few times. Play until you feel like stopping!

Century Club, Power Hour and Others

This is one that I’ve never been able to finish. I first tried Century Club in college. The game is to drink a shot of beer every minute for 100 minutes. I am pretty sure I got to minute 35 and almost puked. My roommate, Heather, on the other hand was able to successfully finish and then go out to the bars for more. That girl could drink a ton and I don’t think I ever saw her hungover. Power Hour is the same game, but for only 60 minutes.

I tried Power Hour with my friend Nick a couple of years ago. That time I ended up playing with Maui Brewing Pog Seltzer rather than beer. I thought it would be a little easier since the seltzer isn’t super strong tasting and is a lot lighter than beers. We weren’t physically together at the time so we were playing via Zoom. Thanks a lot Covid! Initially, Nick and I were worried that we’d lose track of the minutes. Do you set a timer? Who keeps track of how many minutes have passed? Luckily there are people out there who make sure that these things are taken care of.

Power Hour Playlists

If you go to YouTube, there are a bunch of play lists that change songs every minute. You then only have to pay attention when the music changes. I was only able to find one Century Club Playlist that had music. The others were just countdowns with a bell indicating when to take another drink. Power Hour had quite a few playlists, often based on different decades of music. Check out this 90’s playlist as an example.

Nick and I had different experiences with power hour. He was able to stay on track and complete all 60 shots in 60 minutes. I hit minute 28 and then my stomach got a little unhappy. It wasn’t necessarily the alcohol, but the carbonation. I had to skip a minute and then was able to get back into it. There were a few times that I had to take a break, but I think overall I only missed five or six shots. Maybe I should have been eating while playing to settle the carbonation, but I was worried my stomach might not be happy about being full.

Send Me Your Drinking Games

I’d love to discover more drinking games to share with all those other grasshoppers out there. If you have any that you enjoy playing, please send them my way in the comments here, on Instagram or email me at thedrinkingsensei@gmail.com.
